âAre we too early?â
Dodie stepped from the long, sleek car and twinkled at Sister Joan with such determination that the latter had a sudden unsettling vision of her twinkling all round the convent, spreading gaiety and irritation like honey left too long in the jar.
âYouâre just in time for a cup of tea,â she said cordially. âDerek, there isnât a proper garage any longer, Iâm afraid. If you leave your car at the side I can help you carry your bags over to the postulancy.â
âIs that the main house?â Dodie enquired. âDo we get to see inside it?â
âYes, of course. Youâll be sharing the evening meal with us every day,â Sister Joan said. âIf youâll come this way?â
She would have taken one of the suitcases but Derek had bent to pick up Dodieâs neat black one and shouldered his own while Paul carried two, both of maroon leather with his initials in silver on them.
âYou didnât bring your own car?â Sister Joan asked him as they started towards the rear of the building.
âDarling, didnât I say?â Paul smiled at her lazily. âIâm in the last few months of a three-year driving ban. Too much alcohol on an empty stomach if youâll excuse the vulgarism!â
Which surely meant he couldnât have been the one whoâd knocked down Bryan Grimes and then driven on without stopping to see how badly Bryan had been injured, unless heâd been driving illegally? Mentally she ordered herself to stop playing amateur detective and behave like a hostess.
âThis is the enclosure garden,â she said, nodding towards the low wall. âYouâre very welcome to walk or sit there whenever you like. We sell quite a lot of our own fruit and vegetables. Thatâs Sister Marthaâs domain. She can make anything grow.â
âThere are flowers too,â Dodie said.
âFor the altar. Oh, while I remember youâre welcome in the chapel for any service or simply to sit there and relax. Thereâs a timetable in the postulancy.â
âYouâre not going to suggest we play tennis, are you?â Paul enquired, looking with disfavour at the weed-rich court with its rusted posts.
âNo, but I wish I could,â she said wistfully. âNobodyâs played there for years. If we could get it shipshape again it would be marvellous for exercise.â
âJust imagine all the little novices leaping about with their habits flying up!â Paul said.
âYou imagine it,â Sister Joan said coldly.
âIt wouldnât raise his temperature one iota,â Dodie said maliciously. âIf they were monks nowââ
âHere we are!â Sister Joan raised her voice in determined cheerfulness. âThis is where the novice mistress and the postulants spend most of their time. The postulants spend a year here â at the moment we only have one. She and Sister Hilaria â thatâs our novice mistress â are camping up in the storeroom next to the library while there are visitors here.â
âWe must be an inconvenience to them,â Dodie said with sudden anxiety. âI do hope itâs not a dreadful nuisance our being here.â
âNot in the least. Weâre all delighted youâve come,â Sister Joan said.
